The Metal Gear Solid franchise offers the last chapter of Solid Snake’s career as a lone soldier. After 21 years of saving the world, he will fight his final and most impressive battle in Metal Gear Solid 4.
Unlike many third-person action games, Metal Gear Solid 4 has a really strong storyline. Solid Snake is pulled from retirement for one final mission. He must go into a war zone to assess the situation and the state of the troops. Also on his plate is the assassination of Liquid Ocelot, the head of five of the largest PMCs. While this might have once been a piece of cake for Solid Snake, these days find him suffering from cellular degeneration causing him to age rapidly. The problems created by this disability will make Snake’s job that much more difficult. The plot unfolds in long cut scenes which allows the story to be adequately developed, enhancing the game play.
The graphics in Metal Gear Solid 4 are dramatic and realistic. The cut scenes and game play are nearly equal in quality. Every scene is rendered in exquisite detail, and sets the bar high for others in this genre. Some of the load times are a bit long and installs between each of the 5 acts can be irritating, but the overall visual quality is amazing.
Game play features a huge arsenal of new weapons and vehicles, while the classic weapons remain available. A first person shooter game, Killzone 2, also features team dynamics. Your squad does a great job backing you up and assisting with mission completion. Devices available include a robot to aid in scoping out enemies and a suit with real-time camouflaging – and upgrade from the manual control of suits in the previous version. Keep an eye on the psyche gauge, the replacement for the hunger gauge in MGS3. When Snake is in high stress situations, it will gradually deplete his psyche gauge and decrease his abilities in the field. Taking the time to replenish via Regain drink or relaxation will restore Snake’s aim and performance.
The AI in MGS 4 can be extremely challenging, especially in boss battles. You may find yourself frustrated with the confusing confrontations, so be prepared to repeat these battles.
Metal Gear Solid 4 offers many options including an impressive online mode. A great payoff for those wishing to replay the game is the ability to retain your money from the previous play through. This will allow increased options for weapons and allows for different playing styles.
Metal Gear Solid 4 has exceeded expectations for Playstation 3 owners. The intricate graphics and attention to detail make it visually exhilarating. The well structured storyline pulls the player into Solid Snake's world. The game play options blow others games out of the water. If you have a PS3 and don't have Metal Gear Solid 4 yet, what are you waiting for?
