Review

As a Grand Theft Auto fan myself I tend to pick apart the problems in each of the franchises games; but with GTA IV I am having a very difficult time finding flaws in its design, performance, and game play. I don't think any of you would be able to either!

Apart from the usual "omg dis game is gr8" that people describe the game as, I intend to provide an in-depth review on my personal likes, dislikes, and overall opinion of the game.

From the standpoint of an individual who has never played a Grand Theft Auto game it may be a bit overwhelming, but what's great about the series is that it takes you on a mandatory tutorial that spans the entire game. Even though this may seem like it could get annoying, it really is a big help in learning how to play the game. The tutorial explains the different mechanics of the game in just a short sentence or two when it's needed, is easily understood, and in no time anyone could become a master.

Graphics
I would like to applaud the designers of the game for the tremendous graphics in the game. I have visited New York City before and it is by far the greatest artificial representation of the city, which is a feat I thought was nearly impossible to do after playing True Crime: New York City.

With a high definition TV that is correctly hooked up, Grand Theft Auto IV looks Phenomenal. The detail put into the game surpasses any other game that I have played, whether it's small bits of garbage flying through the wind, reflections from the puddles created by rain, or blood splatter on the front of your car as you hit a pedestrian you can't go wrong with the detail. As I am playing through the story I am constantly finding new little bits of detail I have never noticed before.

Even if you are not able to view the game in high definition it still looks great. Before I bought my first HDTV I had a 21" SDTV that was lack of a better word crap, but the game still looked amazing. The only problem I had with the game on a TV that wasn't in high definition was the mobile phone which was somewhat hard to read, but it was manageable.

Performance
I suppose it depends on what system you play GTA4 on to really determine it's performance, but on my PlayStation 3 it seems that performance is excellent. Now knowing the Xbox 360 and common PC's I would go as far to say that it performs best on the PS3 for multiple reasons, the PlayStation 3 has better hardware specifications as well as a much more efficient processor than the Xbox 360, I wouldn't think the PC would deliver very good performance for such a big game, but I don't think it would be bad. Now I know I will be receiving messages from angry 360 owners, but before you click that send button please look at the specifications first.

Besides the differences in the systems I have only experienced a drop in performance a few times, but usually it is in high intensive action sequences. My favorite thing to do is to race with the police through Times Square as fast as I can, and at times I crash and end up blowing up a dozen cars because of it. With these parameters it is almost always going to seem a bit "lagged" on any system, but it regains it's great performance just seconds later.

Game Play
If you have played through the previous Grand Theft Auto games you know just how great the story is written, and GTA4 does not disappoint. Though the cut scenes can become rather long at times they still suck you into the very detailed plot. As you, Niko Bellic, have found a reason to run from your country you decide to come to Liberty City where your cousin Roman Bellic lives. Roman has written you letters throughout the years telling how great the country is, and how wealthy and powerful he has become, but when arriving you find out the truth about your cousin, and you realize he has lied about everything. From being pestered by loan sharks you need to rise from the depths of Liberty City into a powerful and wealthy individual.

Besides the basic story of the game, you really feel a part of the city as you roam around the city stealing cars, money, and anything you can get your hands on. The classic Grand Theft Auto is still a major part of the game, and has become much more detailed and enticing.

In previous installments of the series we have all become accustomed to using the Emergency Break in order to turn sharply and efficiently, but now you must become much more proficient in using your regular break to make some of those corners, as well as a combination of both regular and emergency break for those really tough turns. This is a little difficult to get used to, but once you do it's a pleasure to use.

Grand Theft Auto is now in the 21st century! That's right, Niko possesses a cell phone which you can use anytime that you want to contact friends, call for an emergency vehicle, and even to enter cheats. The entire story and gameplay revolves around the cell phone much like much of today's society. Also included in the game is the internet, Niko can check his emails, find dates, and read news about the latest havoc you've caused.

There are just so many new features for the game play with this installment that I can only highlight a few of them, and even that took up a lot of space.

Conclusion
You cannot go wrong with Grand Theft Auto IV, you will be enjoying 100+ hours of entertainment from the great graphics, next generation technologies, and it's enticing story and advanced game play. I give the game a full 10 out of 10 and will continue to play for many many more hours.
